South Omo Zone is home to agro-pastoral and pastoral communities that own a significant share of the country’s livestock, including cattle, sheep, and goats. Of the zone’s ten woredas, six are pastoral and support a vast livestock population. South Omo Zone alone has approximately 1.94 million cattle, 3.2 million sheep, and 5.8 million goats (South Omo Zone Statistical Abstract, 2021/22). Despite its immense potential for driving socio-economic transformation, the Zone remains one of the most neglected areas in the country.
