Hailemariam & Roman Foundation(HRF) in collaboration with the South Omo Zone Health Department provided a two-day training for traditional birth attendants (TBA) to promote the coverage and utilization of skilled birth services. 77 traditional birth attendants from the Hamer Woreda, Turmi city administration, and Bena Tsemay Woreda took part in the training, which was conducted on two consecutive days in each cluster of health centers in 11 rounds. The training ran from November 13 to November 24, 2023.

The Chief of Program for the Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health (MNCH) and Nutrition Program at HRF, Meskele Lera explained the training’s benefits, stating that it was designed to provide highly influential traditional birth attendants with skills in the value of skilled birth attendance, so they can support health facilities’ delivery of care as liaisons and mobilizers.

The traditional birth attendants who attended the eleventh round of training for two consecutive days were able to gain a good understanding from the training, he said, and pledged to contribute to efforts that will increase coverage for mothers who give birth at health centers assisted by trained professionals.

The participants of the training said the training enabled them to contribute positively to the concerted effort to increase the utilization of skilled birth attendance in their locality.
