The Hailemariam & Roman Foundation (HRF) in collaboration with South Omo Zone Health Department organized a ten-day training on obstetrics ultrasound for healthcare providers from August 21 to August 30, 2023, at Jinka General Hospital. The training was attended by a total of 14 trainees drawn from 7 health centers from Turmi City Administration, Bena Tsemay, and Hamer woredas of the South Omo Zone.
Many pregnant women in the pastoral areas of the South Omo Zone travel distances for basic maternal health services. It is to be recalled that understanding the prevailing problems, the HRF recently provided four portable Doppler ultrasonography equipment to four health centers in the South Omo Zone.
Regarding the significance of the training, Mr. Meskele Lera, Maternal, Neonatal, & Child Health (MNCH) & Nutrition Program Chief of the HRF, stated that the training is intended to equip health care providers with the fundamentals of obstetrics ultrasound and ensure the use and application of donated Doppler ultrasounds for antenatal care (ANC), labor & delivery clients. “We would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to South Omo Zone Health Department and its sub-zonal bodies for the commendable leadership and partnerships towards transforming the health care systems in the area,” he added.
According to the trainees who expressed their opinions, the training was provided in a modular format supported with practical sessions that featured demonstrations at four health facilities including Jinka General Hospital. They noted that as a result of the training, they learned the basics of obstetric ultrasound as well as how to handle any operational challenges.
