The Hailemariam & Roman Foundation (HRF) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gamo Development Association to collaborate on the community-based conservation & alternative livelihood initiatives on January 24, 2025, in Arba Minch City. The signing ceremony took place in Arba Minch City, marking a significant step towards community-based conservation and eco-tourism initiatives.

The event was attended by H.E. Roman Tesfaye, former First Lady of Ethiopia and CEO of the HRF; Dr. Sosina Hailemariam, Deputy CEO & Heads of Programs of the HRF, Dr. Demissie Admasu , CEO of the Gamo Development Association; Mrs. Lisanework Kassaye, Deputy Administrator of Gamo Zone; and Dr. Alemayehu Assefa, HRF’s Chief of Program for Climate Smart Conservation and Eco-tourism, along with representatives from both organizations.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Demissie Admasu  expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We have eagerly awaited this day and are thrilled to collaborate with HRF on community-based conservation and tourism activities.” He extended gratitude to H.E. Roman for attending despite her busy schedule.

Mrs. Lisanework Kassaye emphasized the importance of conservation, stating, “the conservation of nature is a sacred duty entrusted to all humanity.” She acknowledged HRF’s ongoing efforts in various Zones within South Ethiopia Region and noted that the Gamo Zone administration is ready to provide all necessary support for the joint initiatives, particularly for HRF’s  projects in the Zone.

H.E. Roman Tesfaye highlighted the partnership’s focus on community-based conservation & alternative livelihoods, stating, “this MoU emphasizes our commitment to work together in preserving our precious natural resources in the Gamo Zone while providing economic benefits to the community through nature-based solutions to address biodiversity loss.” Her Excellency further elaborated on the importance of integrating local communities into conservation efforts, noting that empowering residents to take an active role in protecting their environment is essential for sustainable development.

The scope of the MoU establishes a framework for mutual understanding and partnership between HRF and GaDA for community-based conservation of natural resources in the Chamo landscape and Gamo zone, with the agreement effective for five years and subject to renewal by mutual consent.
