The Hamer and Benatsemay Woredas in South Omo Zone are among the geographical focal areas of the health program of the Hailemariam & Roman Foundation. It is to be recalled that the HRF held an advocacy conference on maternal and child health development in the Woredas last June.
Following the advocacy conference, practical initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child health were launched in several kebeles throughout the Woredas. Last week, Alduba cluster’s Dizzy Ama and Sle kebele distributed mosquito net, and mothers who reached the time of delivery attended health centers and started a campaign with the slogan “enough to give birth at home”.
Each kebele is said to have transported the expectant moms to the maternity unit of the health center while dressing them in a maternity pajama at their own expense.
This outcome was attributed to the consensus reached among all parties involved in the advocacy conference to take their fair share, and it was emphasized that the significant progress made in these kebeles should be replicated in other kebeles in the future.
In this respect, the HRF reassured to continue its actions to make the projects it has commenced in the two woredas on the maternal, neonatal and child health and nutrition become a model for other places.
