The protection of our planet’s most precious natural resources is undoubtedly the responsibility of Park Rangers. Unfortunately, everyday they go to work, they put their lives in jeopardy due to human greed. The Hailemariam & Roman Foundation (HRF) is determined that we must translate this understanding into practical action on the ground and ensure that the risky work park rangers do to safeguard our priceless wildlife is supported and respected.
On July 27, 2022, Mr. Ayta Torsi, a valiant and dedicated park ranger for the Mago National Park, was killed in the line of duty. According to the latest information released by Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), at 8:00pm in the evening, armed illegals stormed into the park and shot him, who later died without being able to get treatment. Mago National Park is one of the national parks in the country that the HRF has selected for the first phase of intervention with perceived needs to add value in transforming the eco-tourism and conservation.
HRF expresses its deep sorrow at the death of Ranger Ayta Torsi and wishes for comfort to his family, Mago National Park, and the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority.
In light of this, HRF is extremely concerned about the issue and urges that strong backing from governments and other partners, as well as the enforcement of stiffer, more effective laws are put in place to prevent any more tragedies from taking place.
